Spice, Sparring, and Supply Runs

Original Article: Spice, Sparring, and Supply Runs — Upland Official Medium

Quick Take

The first weekly service structure drop after the April 22 footprint update. Three new structures — Tandoor House, Camp World, and Southside Boxing Club — at $4.99 / $6.99 / $9.99. Two stories here: (1) the promised system-wide SU reduction was quietly reversed by Upland on April 22 via an “Editor’s Note” added to the prior dev update — existing SU values are preserved, footprints shrank without a SU cost; (2) two of the three new structures have SU values in the game client that differ from the values Upland printed in this Medium article.

Update · April 22–23, 2026 · Two findings

1. The SU reduction was reversed, and Upland got the high-reach channels right. On Apr 22 at 8:12 AM PT, Squallmuzza posted “Reduced Footprints Are Now Live” to Upland’s Discord #live-updates: “Full Service Unit value preserved.” One minute later (8:13 AM PT) the same reversal hit the in-game live-updates channel, explicitly referencing the original announcement. Both of the two highest-reach official surfaces carried the correction essentially simultaneously. That’s a real win and worth saying clearly. Two lower-reach surfaces still carry the original claim as of publication: the Apr 21 Medium article body (editor’s note on top, body text unchanged below it) and X1 The Gamer’s YouTube dev update (still live, still says SU will be reduced, no annotation). We verified the game client: 150 of 157 sampled service structures match pre-reversal SU values. The footprint update shipped; SU was preserved; the two fast-moving channels said so in time.

2. Two of three new structures have in-game SU values that don’t match the Medium article. Article says Tandoor House 3 SU / Southside Boxing Club 4 SU. Game shows Tandoor 4 SU / Southside 3 SU. Camp World matches at 3 SU. SPH values all match. Our tables and the SU Checker use the in-game values — those are what affect your Resident Score.

How This Compares to Vol. 40

Vol. 40 dropped one week ago (April 15). The Apr 22 footprint update shipped without the threatened SU reduction, so both weeks are on the same SU scale. The tier-by-tier comparison using in-game values:

Price Vol. 40 (Apr 15) Vol. 41 (Apr 22) SU change at price tier
$4.99 Delicatessen Shop — 4 SU Essential Tandoor House — 4 SU Entertainment Flat SU, category shift
$6.99 Mexican Restaurant — 6 SU Entertainment Camp World — 3 SU Essential −50% SU
$9.99 Tennis Court — 27 SU Essential Southside Boxing Club — 3 SU Essential −89% SU (same category)

Source: In-game Construction menu values, verified Apr 22. The $9.99 Essential slot at Tennis Court 27 SU vs. Southside Boxing Club 3 SU is a 9× swing at identical price and category — a baseline example of why a published SU pricing framework matters. No such framework exists.

What's Promised vs. What's Delivered

Claim / Feature Status Notes
Reduced footprints ✅ Delivered Live Apr 22 as promised. Tighter placement without a SU penalty — a real design win.
System-wide SU decrease announced Apr 21 ↩️ Reversed (2 of 4 channels) Discord and in-game live-updates both carried “Full Service Unit value preserved” at 8:12–8:13 AM PT Apr 22. Medium article body text and X1 YouTube video still carry the original “SU will decrease” claim as of publication.
Published SU for this drop matches the game ⚠️ Partial Tandoor House printed 3 / game shows 4. Southside Boxing printed 4 / game shows 3. Camp World matches at 3. SPH values all match.
SU pricing framework ❌ Still undisclosed $9.99 Essential = 315 SU (Soccer Field), 33 SU (Basketball Court), 27 SU (Tennis Court), 3 SU (Southside Boxing Club). No published rule explains the 105× spread.
Resident Score reward for building neighborhood structures ❌ Still pending These structures feed Resident Score. No tangible reward is attached to Resident Score rankings as of today (see data/pending_utility.json).

Real Talk

Real Talk

Credit where due, and this one’s real. Killing the retroactive SU reduction was the right call. Posting the reversal to Discord and to the in-game live-updates channel within one minute of each other on Apr 22 morning was the right distribution on the two surfaces that matter most. Squallmuzza’s message crediting community feedback is the kind of tone we’d like to see every time. This is exactly how a course correction should look when it counts — say it fast, say it in the places every active player actually sees. The gap is closing the loop on the two slower surfaces: the Medium article body still says SU will decrease (editor’s note got bolted on top instead of editing the paragraph), and X1’s dev-update YouTube video is still live with an uncorrected on-camera explanation. Both are fixable in under a minute.

Real Talk

Still worth calling out: even with the reversal shipped cleanly on the fast channels, the $9.99 Essential price tier now spans Tennis Court 27 SU to Southside Boxing Club 3 SU — a 9× swing across two weeks at the same price and same category, with no published pricing framework. And two of this week’s new structures shipped with SU values in-game that don’t match the Medium article that was written to sell them. The structures themselves still feed Resident Score, which still has no tangible reward attached. That part hasn’t changed.

Real Talk

At the same $9.99 Essential price point: Tennis Court 27 SU (Apr 15) vs. Southside Boxing Club 3 SU (Apr 22). That’s a 9× swing at identical price and category, set one week apart, with no published pricing framework to explain it. When we compared Vol. 40 vs. Vol. 41 against the game client, we also caught two SU values in this week’s article (Tandoor and Southside) that don’t match the game. If a pricing framework existed, these wouldn’t be detective work every Wednesday.

Real Talk

Every one of these structures feeds Resident Score. Resident Score still has no tangible reward attached to it — the missions that used it were auto-completed for Blossom Season via single plant placement on April 8, and are scheduled to return “once systems are stabilized.” Build with intent, but don’t build on the assumption that the score this structure feeds will pay out. Our audit and data/pending_utility.json track this one.
