Original Article: Developer Update: Block Explorer Utility & Structure Footprints — Upland Official Medium
Upland reversed the Service Unit decrease and hit both high-reach channels fast. Two lower-reach channels still carry the original claim.
Here is the paper trail we verified, with timestamps:
- Discord #live-updates — Apr 22, 8:12 AM PT — ✅ Reversal posted. Squallmuzza, standalone message titled “Reduced Footprints Are Now Live”: “Full Service Unit value preserved.” Credits community feedback. ~88 positive reactions.
- In-game announcement board (live-updates channel) — Apr 22, 8:13 AM PT — ✅ Reversal posted. Squallmuzza, same title, same language. Explicitly references the original announcement: “In our initial announcement, we shared that reduced building footprints would come with a reduction [in SU]… maintaining original Service Unit values.” Landed one minute after the Discord post on the highest-reach channel Upland controls.
- Medium article (this post) — ⚠️ Partial. Editor’s note bolted to the top saying SU is preserved. The body text below still contains “service units will decrease across all service structures.” Unstruck, unedited. Readers get both claims in the same document.
- X1 The Gamer YouTube dev update (link) — ❌ Uncorrected. Still live, X1 still says on camera “service structure units are going to be reduced to match the smaller footprints,” still explains SU as derived from total footprint. No pinned comment, no annotation, no description edit 14+ hours post-reversal.
Ground-truth verification: On Apr 22 we sampled 157 service structures in-game on Kevin’s property against our SU Checker. 150 of them match pre-reversal values exactly — Tennis Court 27 SU, Soccer Field 315 SU, Track & Field Complex 468 SU, and so on. The footprint reduction shipped; the SU preservation is real.
This is a genuine good outcome, communicated well on the channels that matter most for reach. Upland heard the community pushback, chose the better outcome, and delivered the reversal announcement to Discord and the in-game live-updates board within one minute of each other. That is the template for how a course correction should look when it counts. The remaining gap — editing the Medium body paragraph, and annotating the YouTube video — is small. Both are fixable in under a minute of work each. Until they are, anyone whose first touchpoint is the original Medium article or X1’s video walks away with outdated information.
One technical question still open. X1’s video says the SU algorithm was driven by total footprint. Footprint shrank. SU didn’t. If X1’s explanation was accurate, the algorithm was quietly re-engineered to decouple SU from footprint — an undisclosed engineering change. If he was wrong, the algorithm explanation is sitting in an official dev-update video uncorrected. Small question; worth one sentence of clarification.
Our Real Talk boxes below are preserved as written on April 21 against the original “SU will decrease” text. Treat them as the pre-reversal analysis.

Quick Take
Written against the original Apr 21 announcement — see Update above for Upland’s Apr 22 walkback on the SU reduction.
Two announcements in one post, both going live within 24 hours. Block Explorers get a stamina system that ties trove collection to active play time, and Director Block Explorers are quietly confirmed to be below the highest rarity tier. Separately, Upland is reducing structure footprints system-wide — which by their own words means “service units will decrease across all service structures,” including the ones already built on player properties.
What's Changing
| Change | When | Effect on Existing Assets | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block Explorer stamina system | “Within the next 24 hours” (Apr 22) | Applies to all Block Explorers | Each explorer has a collection limit, then a cooldown. When one hits its limit, another takes over automatically. Higher-rarity BEs get longer active time and faster recovery. |
| Director Block Explorer rarity placement | Announced now | Informational | Director BEs receive “a specific rarity tier to be announced in advance” and explicitly are “not the highest tier.” Players who paid for Director tier are at neither the top of the rarity stack nor the bottom. |
| Block Explorer modifiers (future) | “In active development” | TBD | Examples floated: better trove collection for certain types, improved reward quality. “Not yet finalized.” No timeline. |
| Structure footprint reduction (system-wide) | “Tomorrow” (Apr 22) | Applies to ALL structures — including those already placed on player properties | Footprints shrink across every building model. Tighter layouts, closer decoration placement. Footprints remain rectangular. |
| Service Unit reduction (system-wide) | Tied to footprint update | Applies retroactively to existing builds | Upland's own wording: “service units will decrease across all service structures.” No published new values, no disclosed reduction ratio, no per-structure impact table. |
| Resident Score adjustment | Tied to footprint/SU update | Neighborhood-level | Upland: “Resident scores may be adjusted as part of ongoing balancing.” This is the third Resident Score recalibration in a month. |
What's Promised vs. What's Delivered
| Claim | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Block Explorer stamina + auto-swap | ⏳ Within 24 hours | Launching Apr 22, one day after the announcement. |
| Director Block Explorer tier disclosure | ⚠️ Partial | Confirmed to be below the highest tier. The actual rarity label is still “to be announced in advance” — not disclosed in this post. |
| Block Explorer modifiers (specialization, better loot) | ❌ Not yet | “Actively being explored” with no dates. Examples described as directional, not committed. |
| Structure footprint reduction live | ✅ Delivered (Apr 22) | Footprints shrank across all existing and future structures as promised. Verified in-game Apr 22. |
| System-wide SU decrease on existing structures | ↩️ Reversed (Apr 22) | Reversed on the two highest-reach channels (Discord 8:12 AM PT, in-game live-updates 8:13 AM PT): “Full Service Unit value preserved.” Verified in-game — 150/157 structures hold their pre-reduction SU. Medium body text and X1 YouTube video still carry the original claim and have not been updated as of publication. |
| Troves system (the reward layer these mechanics feed) | ❌ Still not live | Referenced throughout the Block Explorer section. Per our audit and data/pending_utility.json, Troves remain pending as of April 21. |
Real Talk
Structures are being retroactively modified. Players bought service structures based on the SU values Upland published at sale time — our SU Checker tracks them, our catalog guide documents them, our audit records the 156:1 ratio between worst and best $9.99 structure. When SU “decreases across all service structures,” that ratio moves. The numerator in every SU-per-dollar comparison you've done to date is about to change, and Upland has not disclosed by how much or for which structures. That's a post-sale change disguised as a footprint optimization.
Director Block Explorers are officially below the top tier. The article phrases it as future disclosure — “a specific rarity tier to be announced in advance, not the highest tier” — but the information is out now: Directors are not the top. Players who paid for Directors under the assumption they were buying premium-tier rarity now learn, via a stamina-system utility announcement, that they are mid-tier. Worth knowing before the next Block Explorer sale.
This is the third Resident Score adjustment in six weeks. April 8: Upland paused the Resident and Influence Score missions and auto-completed them via single plant placement, citing “system recalibration” ahead of Life. April 8 (same day): Greenery Score was added to the scoring ecosystem. April 22 (tomorrow): “Resident scores may be adjusted as part of ongoing balancing” tied to the footprint rewrite. A scoring system that needs three material recalibrations inside a quarter is not a scoring system players can plan around — we documented exactly this dynamic in our audit and in data/pending_utility.json.
Credit where due: tighter footprints are a legitimate design win. Players have been asking for closer placement and less dead space for months, and the update addresses that directly. The problem isn't the footprint change — it's the undisclosed SU consequence riding alongside it. If Upland had published the new SU values in the same article, this would be cleaner. They didn't, so we'll be republishing the entire SU Checker once the update lands and real values surface in-game.
What We're Watching Post-Launch
- The per-structure SU reduction once the update goes live — we'll rebuild
data/structures.jsonfrom Looker Studio or uplytics.org data and surface deltas. - The actual Director Block Explorer rarity label and how stamina curves compare across rarity tiers.
- Whether Resident Score rewards come back or remain auto-completed for the rest of Blossom.
- Trove launch date — Block Explorer stamina is only meaningful once Troves ship.
- Any Discord or in-game announcement from Upland staff (Squallmuzza, X1TheGamer, Shaktilyn) with the unpublished SU comparison table.
