Real Talk
This article announces one delivered feature and nine that don't exist yet. Office Structures are live and permanent — that's a genuinely different approach from the limited-quantity drops we've documented across 40 weeks of service structures. But the offices currently feed into a Commerce Score system that hasn't launched. Players are buying the input to a machine that isn't built yet.
Two days after this article, Upland began selling 2026 Semi Trucks as “the backbone of Trade Routes.” Trade Routes don't exist. Semi Trucks don't carry cargo yet. Trailers — which also don't exist — are described as the mechanism for cargo transport. This is the same pattern documented in our audit Part 4: selling vehicles with forward-looking functionality before the functionality is built. The one difference: Upland is within their stated “2026” timeline window, so this isn't a broken promise yet. It's a familiar sequence.
Buried at the bottom: Sparklet packages in the mobile app now contain 35% less Sparklet per dollar. The stated reason is “encouraging more activity through the exchange and bridge.” The practical effect: in-app Sparklet became more expensive the same week Upland announced a system built on Sparklet-consuming construction. Reduced supply, new demand source, same article.
This article introduces a new scoring concept — Commerce Score — in under a year after Resident Score, Influence Score, Collector Score, and Greenery Score. Whether Commerce Score operates as a standalone metric or a sub-factor feeding into Resident Score isn't fully specified in the article. Either way, each new scoring mechanic creates new spending incentives: build service structures for Resident Score, place offices for Commerce Score, plant greenery for Greenery Score. Introduce a metric, sell the assets that improve it, announce the next metric.
How This Compares
This article follows the pattern documented in our Upland Accountability Report, Part 4 — specifically the vehicle pre-sell cycle. The audit tracks Trade Routes as one of several features where preparations are being sold before the feature ships (alongside Boats/Fishing, Troves, and Life). The audit notes: “Semi Trucks began selling March 19, 2026 as 'the backbone of Trade Routes.' Status as of April 2026: Still within the stated delivery window. No specific date published.”
