Quick Answer
Sparklet is Upland's construction currency. Used for building structures and merging Uppies. It's tradeable — you can buy, sell, and bridge it between the game and external exchanges.
STEM is the Life system currency. Used for feeding and maintaining plants on properties. It's NOT tradeable and never will be. $1 = 1,000 STEM in the store.
